How to Get the Most Cash for Your Junk Car

Most junk car owners are usually intimidated when they hear the term junkyard and fear they won’t get a good deal if they make the call. This is far from the truth, though. Instead of having your old, perhaps totaled vehicle gathering dust in the garage or driveway, you might get some decent cash if you open up to the idea.

In order to successfully sell a junk car in Colorado for a fair amount, you need to familiarize yourself with the various estimation processes that automotive recycling facilities apply.

Price-Determining Factors

A couple of factors ultimately determine the offer a junkyard will make for your old vehicle. Some of them include:

  • Make and model: Many junkyards have a favorable list of makes and models on which they are willing to spend money. This mainly depends on popularity and part demand.
  • Manufacture year: As in any other selling scenario, the age of your car will influence its final price. Newer cars are certainly in higher demand than old models unless the vehicle in question is a vintage old-timer.
  • Condition: The more busted your car is, the less cash you will likely receive. If your vehicle is in good shape, you are potentially looking at a higher offer.
  • Weight: Junk cars are typically sold for scrap metal, especially if the parts are not salvageable. If your vehicle is heavier, you might get a bit more depending on scrap metal prices.

Make Your Car Presentable

Before reaching out to a few junkyards and trying to get a reasonable price, take some time to tidy it up. Remove any garbage and wash it inside and out. Even though junkyards usually scrap junk cars, if they’re in good enough condition, properly cleaned, and have salvageable parts, you might get a few extra bucks.

Get Multiple Offers

If you are trying to sell a junk car, chances are that there are many junkyards in your area. Give a couple of them a call, provide them with all the necessary information about the vehicle, and aim for the best possible offer. Some will offer higher than others.

Negotiate

Just because you got an offer doesn’t mean that you don’t have the right to negotiate a better price. When getting offers from multiple junkyards, you have the opportunity to make them compete against each other. If one of them tries to lowball you, mention what their competitor offered, and they might be incentivized to go a little higher. If the offer is just downright insulting, don’t be afraid to walk away from a bad deal.
